How to wash a cap without ruining the shape

Most caps are ruined in the wash rather than in wear. The damage is usually done in one cycle and it is not reversible.

Why the machine is the problem

Two things break in a washing machine, and they break for different reasons.

The crown structure goes first. Buckram interlining holds its stiffness through normal use and loses it when saturated and agitated. It comes out of the machine soft, and it stays soft.

The brim goes second. A plastic brim insert flexes under the drum's agitation and takes a set in whatever position it lands in. Sometimes it comes out with a permanent kink. On older caps with cardboard inserts, it disintegrates entirely.

Dishwashers get recommended constantly online. Skip it. Dishwasher detergent is aggressive and heated dry cycles do to a brim exactly what you would expect heat to do to plastic.

What you need

Cool water, a small amount of mild detergent, a soft brush or an old toothbrush, and a clean towel. That is the entire list.

The method

Spot treat first. Work a little detergent directly into the sweatband and any marked areas with the brush, using light circular pressure. The sweatband is where most of the actual soil is.

Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of detergent. Submerge the hat and leave it for fifteen to twenty minutes. Do not scrub the outer panels. Do not wring it.

Rinse under cool running water until the water runs clear. Detergent left in the fabric attracts dirt faster than the original soil did.

Press the water out gently with a towel. Never twist.

Drying is where hats get ruined

This is the step that matters most and the one most people skip past.

Do not lay a hat flat. A brim dried flat will hold that shape permanently, and a crown dried collapsed will stay collapsed. The structure sets as it dries, in whatever shape it is in.

Put something inside the crown to hold its shape. A rolled towel, a small container, or a purpose-made hat form all work. Curve the brim by hand while it is still damp and check it once or twice as it dries.

Air dry only, out of direct sun and away from heat. A hat takes six to twelve hours to dry properly. Rushing it with a dryer or a heat vent will cost you the shape.

Frequency

Wash less than you think. Wipe the inner band with a damp cloth after heavy sweating and a full wash becomes necessary maybe twice a year.
