What UPF means on a hat, and what it doesn't

Questions

Is UPF the same as SPF?

No. SPF rates sunscreen and time. UPF rates how much ultraviolet light a fabric lets through: UPF 50 means one fiftieth passes.

Does a UPF hat protect your whole face?

Only where fabric or shade covers. The rating applies to the covered skin; your cheeks and nose rely on the brim's shadow and sunscreen.

Do all hats block UV?

All fabric blocks some. Dense technical weaves block far more than thin worn cotton, but a specific rating only means something when it comes from testing.
